Maia Sandu signs decree: Alexandru Machidon becomes Prosecutor General

President Maia Sandu signed a decree on April 30, appointing Alexandru Machidon as the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Moldova. Machidon has been serving in an interim capacity since May 28, 2025. He is set to take the oath of office on April 30, 2026, at which point he will fully assume his duties.

Alexandru Machidon successfully passed the external integrity assessment process, allowing him to attain the position of Prosecutor General. On April 16, the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) approved the report from the External Evaluation Commission, which found no ethical or financial integrity issues concerning Machidon.
It is noteworthy that Alexandru Machidon won the competition organized by the CSP for the head of the Prosecutor General's Office on August 19, 2025. He received a score of 8.86 points, surpassing his opponent, Victor Furtună, who was the interim head of the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Causes and scored 8.23 points.
According to his asset declaration for the year 2024, Machidon reported a salary income of 405,637 lei, along with additional income from other sources totaling 3,200 euros and 22,927 lei. He owns a 65.6-square-meter apartment valued at 34,000 euros and drives a 2017 BMW 520D, which he purchased in 2021 for 26,000 euros.
Over 15 years of experience in the prosecution system
The new Prosecutor General has been active in the prosecution system since January 2008, when he was appointed as the interim prosecutor at the Criuleni District Prosecutor's Office. Between 2009 and 2019, he held several positions within the Criuleni District Prosecutor's Office, including prosecutor, interim chief prosecutor, interim deputy chief prosecutor, and deputy chief prosecutor. In 2019, he was appointed interim deputy chief prosecutor at the Hâncești District Prosecutor's Office, and from June 2019 to January 2020, he returned to Criuleni as deputy chief prosecutor.
From January 2020 to October 2021, Alexandru Machidon worked at the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office. After that, until August 2022, he served as the Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the Criuleni District Prosecutor's Office. In August 2022, he became the prosecutor of the Chișinău Municipality Prosecutor's Office, and from May 2023 to March 2024, he acted as the Chief Prosecutor of the Orhei District Prosecutor's Office.
In June 2024, he was appointed as the Acting Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS), further enhancing his experience in tackling serious crime.
In May 2025, Alexandru Machidon was appointed Acting Prosecutor General of the Republic of Moldova by decree of President Maia Sandu, following the resignation of Ion Munteanu, who was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Justice.
