War in Ukraine directly impacts the Republic of Moldova, Alexandru Musteața

The war in Ukraine continues to pose a significant threat to the security of the Republic of Moldova. Alexandru Musteața, the head of the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS), stated that Russian attacks near the borders have both direct and indirect impacts on the country.
The ongoing war in Ukraine remains the main source of risk, particularly its impact on the neighbouring Republic of Moldova. The Russian Federation's attacks on Ukraine, using drones and missiles, also have repercussions for Moldova. For instance, recent strikes targeted the Isaccea–Vulcănești power line, which is located in Ukraine but affects Moldova's electricity supply. On occasion, drones have even entered Moldovan airspace, though fortunately they fell without causing any casualties, which is a relief.
However, it is crucial to recognize that the intensity of drone usage has increased. The conflict continues, and the illegal actions of the Russian Federation in Ukraine pose a threat to us, irrespective of whether a drone lands on our territory. This situation remains our primary security challenge, as stated by the head of the SIS during a show on Pro TV.
He emphasized that risks extend beyond military threats to include elements of hybrid warfare, such as disinformation campaigns, political manipulation, and attempts to disrupt our internal stability.
“Hybrid warfare, while shifting between various phases, continues to manifest in different forms and adaptations. At this time, I cannot share further details due to the ongoing investigations and information gathering related to this issue,” Musteața noted.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, several drones have traversed Moldovan airspace, with some being downed in various locations across the country, loaded with explosives. Authorities in Chișinău have consistently condemned these incidents, labeling them as serious violations of state sovereignty. In response, the accredited Russian ambassador in Chișinău, Oleg Ozerov, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he received protest notes, and the authorities firmly reiterated their stance against such actions.
