Aid package of 50 million lei announced for affected agricultural sector

Farmers who lost a significant portion of their corn and sunflower harvests due to last year's severe drought will receive financial support totalling 50 million lei. The government has approved this funding, which will be allocated from the National Fund for the Development of Agriculture and Rural Environment.

During a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, Ludmila Catlabuga, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, stated, "Through this mechanism, we provide direct support to farmers who have experienced significant losses. This support is based on documents confirming affected areas with at least 50% damage, and for cases of partial damage, aid will be proportional to the extent of the losses."

The financial assistance will be administered through the Agency for Intervention and Payments for Agriculture. Farmers can submit applications to the agency's territorial divisions within 20 days of the announcement of the decision. Applicants are required to include documentation verifying their losses.

Minister Catlabuga said, "Beyond numbers and mechanisms, this project is genuinely about people. In recent years, an increasing number of young individuals and families have returned home, invested in agriculture, and chosen to build their futures here in the Republic of Moldova. Unfortunately, many of them started their ventures during exceptionally challenging agricultural years. This support sends a clear message that the state stands with them during climate crises and values their efforts, courage, and investment in the Republic of Moldova."

Additionally, the Minister indicated that the ministry is working on the National Resilience Program in Agriculture, aiming to establish "a predictable vision" for long-term adaptation to climate change. Authorities plan to transition from "reactive interventions and compensation for losses" to "sustainable investments in irrigation, modern technologies, resilient crop varieties, effective water management, and durable agricultural infrastructure."

"We need to develop an agriculture sector that is resilient, capable of withstanding difficult years without being overly dependent on climate conditions," the Minister added.

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu noted that the authorities are leveraging all possible resources to assist farmers.

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, by October 23, 2025, a total of 792 loss assessment reports had been registered, with the affected area exceeding 56,000 hectares.
