Nearly 1,900 people die each year from high blood pressure

Hypertension is one of the leading causes of premature death globally. It is a common condition that often goes unnoticed but poses significant health risks. In the Republic of Moldova, more than 20,000 new cases of hypertension are reported annually among adults, and nearly 1,900 individuals die as a result of this disease each year.

The data was presented by the National Public Health Agency (ANSP) in recognition of World Hypertension Day, observed on May 17.

According to the ANSP, hypertension is the leading cause of preventable premature death worldwide. In 2024, approximately 1.4 billion adults aged 30 to 79 are expected to be affected by this condition, representing about one-third of the population in this age group.

Alarmingly, over 44 percent of those impacted are unaware that they have hypertension, and only about 23 percent are able to manage it effectively.

To help prevent hypertension, a healthy lifestyle is recommended. This includes a balanced diet, reducing intake of salt, sugar, and fat, limiting alcohol consumption, quitting smoking, engaging in regular physical activity, and managing stress.

Health specialists also emphasize the importance of periodically measuring blood pressure and increasing screening, particularly for individuals in high-risk groups.

In line with the National Program for the Prevention and Control of Priority Noncommunicable Diseases for 2023-2027, government authorities aim to reduce the prevalence of high blood pressure among adults by 10 percent, decrease average salt consumption by 30 percent, and control obesity levels.
