US-Romania pension agreement in force since September, MFA

Moldovans who hold Romanian citizenship will have the opportunity to receive pensions calculated based on their legal work periods in the United States. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday that the Agreement on Social Security between Romania and the U.S., signed in March 2023, is set to take effect on September 1, 2026.
Romanians, including Moldovans who hold Romanian citizenship, will soon be able to benefit from their years of work in the United States. An agreement has been reached that will take effect once all internal procedures are completed. This agreement will apply to old-age pensions, survivor pensions, and disability benefits. Each participating country will be responsible for paying benefits corresponding to the period worked within its borders.
According to the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the provisions of this agreement will benefit individuals insured in one or both countries, as well as those whose rights are derived from these states.
"The entry into force of the Agreement contributes to the strengthening of the Romanian-American bilateral relationship and enhances social protection for individuals who have worked in both countries," stated the ministry in a press release dated May 22.
The Republic of Moldova has signed 22 social security agreements, 18 of which are currently in effect, including the one with Romania. However, Moldova does not yet have a social security agreement with the United States. In recent years, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection has also established agreements with Italy, Greece, Spain, Latvia, France, Switzerland, Canada, and Ukraine.
