„Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu” Library launches summer challenge for children

The Municipal Library “Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu” will run the eighth edition of its summer program “Summer Challenge” from June 2 to July 24. This year, children are invited to explore Chișinău at the library, which also serves as the theme of the edition: “Exploring Chișinău at the Library”.
Far from its once rigid image, today’s library is a lively, welcoming, and creative space where reading blends with interactive activities, educational workshops, and social experiences.
"This is a program we have had in our agenda for many years, and this time we connected it to the 590th anniversary of the first documentary mention of Chișinău," said the library’s general director, Mariana Harjevschi, in an interview with journalist Daniela Gherman from Radio Moldova.
All 27 branches will host information sessions, interactive lessons, and activities focused on readings about Chișinău. Children will also explore the city through guided tours and documentary visits to cultural institutions in Chișinău and other localities.
The program targets children aged 7 to 12.
"I hope they will have an unforgettable summer. Previous experiences show that children form friendships, broaden their understanding of a topic, and this year they will, of course, discover and rediscover Chișinău through the library’s collections and the people who warmly welcome them," the director said.
Children will be guided through this journey of discovery by librarians and volunteers, who will welcome them every morning starting at 10:00. Registration takes place at the library branches.
"I also hope that, alongside children from Chișinău, we will have children from the diaspora this summer, so they can communicate, get to know each other, and share impressions about both Chișinău and the cities where they live," Mariana Harjevschi added.
The director hopes that this program is not only a tradition for the “Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu” Library but also a much anticipated moment for families and children. She encouraged participation in multiple branches, noting that each tour lasts two weeks, after which participants can choose another library.
On International Children’s Day, Mariana Harjevschi encouraged children to stay connected to libraries and reading, which will continue to guide them in the future.
