Belgium: Transport general strike
Belgian transport services will be affected on Friday by a 24-hour general strike, which began on Thursday evening. Three large unions in the Belgian public services have called the strike on the grounds that the sector is underfunded, reports Radio Romania Actualités.
It comes just two days after another nationwide protest by firefighters and emergency service workers, who are unhappy about the Belgian government's plans to raise the retirement age to 67 and freeze hiring for three years.
Protesters are to picket public administration offices in most towns and cities, and a number of public services will have their opening hours suspended or interrupted at certain times. The strike started last night and will last until 10pm Belgian time on Friday, with the most affected sector being public transport, from rail to metro, across Flanders and Wallonia.
Tourists or those using public transport should consult the online pages of companies such as the Belgian railways, whose timetable will change due to the suspension of scheduled services or delays.
