Nicușor Dan names Eugen Tomac Prime Minister
Romanian President Nicușor Dan appointed MEP Eugen Tomac as the Prime Minister of Romania. The announcement was made on June 4 during a press conference.

"I appoint Mr. Eugen Tomac as Prime Minister to form the Government. It is crucial to focus on the future. Since the parties are struggling to understand each other, the only viable solution is to have a Prime Minister who is independent of these parties in Parliament. I have chosen someone who is not affiliated with any parliamentary parties but possesses the political experience necessary to engage with all of them. Achieving consensus across various parties is essential on numerous issues. Political experience is crucial. This decision reflects my responsibility, and I expect the same level of responsibility from the parties. Eugen Tomac embodies the experience and values needed," declared Nicușor Dan.
In response, Tomac said, "This appointment is both an honor and a significant responsibility."
"I fully acknowledge the difficult context we are currently navigating. I understand the expectations of the Romanian people and the challenges we must face together. My vision is clear: Romania is at a juncture that demands responsibility above all else. Only through this approach can we provide our country with a clear direction. Responsibility is the foundation upon which everything else is built. This is the only way to ensure that investments continue to flow into our country, that reforms yield results, and that state institutions regain the trust of the citizens they serve. In this spirit, I wholeheartedly accept the mission of proposing a professional team dedicated to working for the citizens of Romania," said Eugen Tomac.
Following the nomination, the candidate for Prime Minister will need to negotiate with each party individually to determine if he can secure a solid majority.
According to the Romanian Constitution, the designated Prime Minister has ten days to draft the government program and finalize the list of ministers. At the end of this period, Parliament will hold a vote of confidence, where the designated Prime Minister must obtain at least 233 votes to establish the proposed Government.
Romania has not had a fully functioning government for a month, following the dismissal of Ilie Bolojan on May 5, after a motion of censure initiated by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR).
During this time, several rounds of formal and informal negotiations took place at Cotroceni to form the new Executive.
Eugen Tomac has served as the president of the Popular Movement Party since 2022, and his political career has focused on issues concerning Romanians in the diaspora and relations with the Republic of Moldova.
Tomac's institutional journey began in 2006 when he was appointed as advisor in the Presidential Administration during Traian Băsescu's presidency. Between 2009 and 2012, he served as Secretary of State at the Department for Romanians Abroad. In 2012, he resigned to enter Parliament and has been a Member of the European Parliament since 2019. In October 2025, Nicușor Dan appointed him as an honorary advisor for relations with Romanians abroad.
