Eugen Tomac resigns; Romanian President appoints Adrian Veștea as PM

Eugen Tomac has stepped down as Prime Minister-designate. Romanian President Nicușor Dan has proposed Adrian Veștea as his successor.

On Sunday, June 14, at the Cotroceni Palace, the Romanian head of state announced, "Mr. Eugen Tomac resigned this morning, and under these conditions, I appoint Mr. Adrian Veștea as Prime Minister," according to Agerpres.

Adrian Veștea, the Prime Minister-designate, stated that he accepts this responsibility "in a moment of political crisis." He expressed his gratitude to President Nicușor Dan for the trust placed in him.

"I know the Romanian state well, and I am aware of the people's expectations, the problems we face, and what needs to be done. I have a 30-year career with the National Liberal Party (PNL). I started as a simple local councilor, served three terms as mayor, held a third term as president of the County Council, and had the opportunity to be a member of the Government for a year and a half," said Veștea.

Eugen Tomac also expressed his appreciation to those who agreed to be part of the ministerial list he proposed.

"I set out ten days ago with the conviction that I could convince the democratic parties affiliated with European families to trust me. I was sincere, honest, and open to any reasonable compromise that would quickly provide the country with a government. I regret that I could not convince them, but I hope the future will bring good results for Romania. Thank you, and I wish the designated Prime Minister much success!" Tomac stated at the Cotroceni Palace.

Tomac had presented his government program on Saturday, June 13, which consisted of 21 chapters and identified "zero priority" as the administrative-territorial reform.

Romania has been without a government with full powers for a month, following the dismissal of Ilie Bolojan on May 5, after a motion of censure initiated by the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians was passed.

Who is Adrian Veștea, the designated Prime Minister of Romania?

Adrian Veștea joined the National Liberal Party (PNL) in 1994 at the age of 21. Since then, he has served as a local councilor. He was the mayor of Râșnov for three consecutive terms from 2004 to July 2016.

In the 2016 elections, he was appointed president of the Brașov County Council, a position he held from June 2016 until July 2023.

Subsequently, he served as Minister of Development in the government led by Marcel Ciolacu from June 15, 2023, to December 23, 2024.

In the 2024 local elections, Adrian Veștea was re-elected as president of the Brașov County Council, a position he continues to occupy.

He also served as Secretary General of the PNL, the party's second-highest role, from November 25, 2024, to July 13, 2025.
