Massive Russian attack on Ukraine kills 9, strikes Kyiv UNESCO site

Nine people were killed and dozens injured after a massive Russian strike hit Ukraine on June 15. The bombardment struck critical infrastructure and endangered cultural landmarks.

In Kyiv, a blaze broke out at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site. While the fire at the Dormition Cathedral was contained, the strike caused extensive damage to residential buildings and civilian infrastructure.

Approximately 140,000 consumers in the capital were left without electricity. City officials reported four deaths and 25 injuries in Kyiv alone.

In the Kharkiv region, Russian forces employed a lethal double-tap tactic. Five first responders were killed after a second strike targeted them while they were battling a fire caused by an initial bombardment.

At least five other people sustained injuries in the Kharkiv attack. Emergency crews continue to search through debris as local authorities assess the damage across the region.
