Taiwan ramps up intelligence efforts targeting Chinese officials

Taiwan’s National Security Bureau (NSB) launched a secure portal on Sunday, June 14, inviting Chinese citizens to report sensitive information regarding the mainland’s intelligence operations. Taipei intends this platform to leverage internal dissatisfaction to challenge the current regime.

The initiative follows a sharp increase in detected Chinese espionage cases targeting the island. The NSB notes that deepening socioeconomic instability in China has heightened public grievances, creating a pool of potential informants.

Users accessing the portal are presented with an AI-generated video depicting a Chinese public servant observing the systematic purging of colleagues. The narrative concludes with the protagonist acquiring a new mobile device, signaling a shift in loyalty.

While the portal remains blocked within China, the NSB anticipates that tech-savvy citizens will utilize VPNs to bypass state firewalls. This strategy mirrors intelligence-gathering models employed by agencies in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel.

Beijing previously adopted similar tactics in 2024, when it established channels for reporting on perceived Taiwanese separatists. Taiwan continues to assert its sovereign status, maintaining that the island’s future remains the sole prerogative of its residents.
