Starmer signals global crackdown on youth social media access
London outlines plans to restrict social media access for individuals under 16, citing systemic risks to minor safety. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that major platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, and X, face a mandatory exclusion of underage users.
The proposed legislation intends to mitigate exposure to content engineered to foster psychological dependency. While social platforms face strict prohibition, secure messaging services like WhatsApp remain outside the scope of this mandate.
The government aims to finalize the bill by December 2026, targeting a full enforcement by spring 2027. Authorities are also evaluating unprecedented measures for gaming and live-streaming services, addressing the risks posed by unfiltered interaction with anonymous users.
This initiative follows similar legislative efforts in Australia and Canada, where governments are increasingly curbing the influence of algorithmic engagement on minors. Further policy specifications are expected in July.
