The Republic of Moldova is in the process of modernizing its security and defense sector, aiming to leverage the experience of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO). Strengthening national security and defense translates to "greater security for our citizens" while also making a tangible contribution to the security of the entire region.

The statements were made by Mihai Popșoi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, during a meeting with Kevin Hamilton, the NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy.

Agne Gleveckaite, the new head of the NATO Liaison Office in Chișinău, also participated in the discussions. Mihai Popșoi congratulated her on taking up the mandate and wished her success in her new responsibilities.

During the meeting, the officials discussed ways to strengthen the partnership between the Republic of Moldova and NATO, as well as priorities for future collaboration.

Among the topics addressed were expanding cooperation programs and enhancing the country's resilience against current challenges, including the prevention and combatting of disinformation, external interference, and hybrid and cyber threats.

Particular emphasis was placed on the implementation of key joint initiatives, specifically the Individual Partnership Program (IPP) for the period 2025–2028 and the Assistance Package for Strengthening the Security and Defense Capabilities (DCBI) of the Republic of Moldova.

Mihai Popșoi highlighted the importance of the partnership between the Republic of Moldova and NATO, established in 1994, which has generated tangible results over the years. He reiterated the Chișinău authorities' interest in continuing to benefit from NATO's expertise and support in modernizing security and defense institutions.

“We are open to continuing cooperation and utilizing the programs offered by international partners, including NATO, to develop our institutional capacities to address the current challenges and crises we face, including hybrid and cyber attacks,” said Mihai Popșoi.

In turn, Kevin Hamilton expressed appreciation for the Republic of Moldova's contribution to strengthening European security through its participation in the KFOR peacekeeping operation in Kosovo. He reaffirmed NATO's support for the ongoing modernization and reform processes in the country, in accordance with democratic principles.

The officials also exchanged views on the regional security situation, international efforts to end the Russian Federation's war of aggression against Ukraine, and its impact on the Republic of Moldova. The discussions highlighted the actions of the Chișinău authorities to peacefully settle the Transnistrian conflict and work towards the country's reintegration.
