Literary elite awarded at Moldova Writers' Union Gala 2026

The Writers' Union of Moldova honored the finest literary works of 2025 at its annual Awards Gala on Friday, June 26.

The ceremony celebrated outstanding achievements in local literature, bringing both established authors and promising new voices to the stage. Awards spanned multiple categories, including poetry, prose, drama, translations, and literary debuts.

Rising talent and veteran laureates

"Coming from journalism, I am used to prioritizing raw facts, but literature grants me the freedom to interpret reality through my own lens," stated Irina Gotișan, who took home the Debut Prize. She added that the award represents vital validation from peers who truly understand the depth of the craft.

While Gotișan celebrated her first major literary milestone, veteran writer Val Butnaru returned to the winner's circle.

"Like everyone else right now, I am closely watching Messi compete at 39 in the World Cup," remarked Butnaru, who secured the Prose Prize. "He could easily step away, yet he continues because true value endures. When your own guild recognizes your work, it proves the book carries genuine weight."

Cultivating genre and community

The Children's Literature Prize went to Maria Pilchin for her novel, The State Secretary's Daughter.

"This recognition is both an honor and an incentive," Pilchin noted. "Children's literature is a segment we must actively develop in Moldova, and I am thrilled by the growing interest in this genre. My book is fundamentally a novel about reading and the transformative power of literature."

Meanwhile, Constantin Olteanu was distinguished with the Short Prose Prize.

"This is a book very close to my heart, composed of fragments of lived experiences that continually help me answer life's vital questions," Olteanu emphasized.

Institutional recognition

Writers' Union President Teo Chiriac highlighted the productivity of the local creative community.

"Our authors have successfully published over 100 titles across various genres this past year," Chiriac stated. "Once a year, we gather to express our deep gratitude and encourage new creative pursuits for future galas."

Award recipients received bespoke trophies crafted by sculptor Valentin Vârtosu.

A special television broadcast featuring the full recording of the event and the complete list of winners will air on Moldova 1 on Saturday, July 4.
