Moldova PAS party fields pro-EU technocrat Tofan for premiership

Moldova’s ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) has officially nominated prominent businessman and investor Vasile Tofan for the position of prime minister.
Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu announced the decision on Friday, July 10, following extensive internal deliberations regarding the strategic vision and economic priorities of the upcoming administration.
The nomination leverages the party's absolute legislative majority, ensuring a swift transition ahead of formal constitutional consultations with President Maia Sandu scheduled for Saturday, July 11.
Strategic Economic Reforms
Grosu emphasized that Tofan brings a distinguished background in private equity, international investments, and corporate governance.
The nominee has previously managed major corporate assets and directed investment frameworks that generated significant employment and reinforced national economic modernization.
The incoming cabinet will focus heavily on accelerating European integration, boosting macroeconomic stability, and strengthening institutional resilience amid complex regional geopolitical challenges.
Accession Framework
Accepting the mandate, Tofan acknowledged the significant responsibility and public expectations surrounding the transition.
While noting the scale of upcoming structural challenges, he pledged to channel his entire corporate expertise into achieving Moldova’s primary strategic objectives.
The designated prime minister specifically committed to executing critical reforms necessary to secure full European Union membership by the target year of 2028.
Upon receiving the formal presidential decree, Tofan will have a 15-day constitutional window to finalize his cabinet lineup and present a comprehensive governance program for parliamentary approval.
