The Republic of Moldova will impose more sanctions on the Russian Federation. Statements by the Minister of Foreign Affairs

The Republic of Moldova started to gradually align itself with the sanctions imposed by the European Union on the Russian Federation for aggression against Ukraine, which will target several Russian citizens, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nicu Popescu, in an interview for Free Europe. According to the official, it is mainly about travel bans, freezing of bank accounts or assets of individuals who are involved in the aggression against Ukraine.

"At this stage, we have been invited to join, this year, sanctions related to human rights and later, in accordance with the invitations from the EU, we will increase the rate of alignment with European sanctions. Now, the application of this alignment will take a little longer, it is probably necessary for all the legal steps to take place".

We remind you that at the beginning of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, the authorities in Chisinau declared that the Western partners, including the European Union, showed understanding towards the position of the Republic of Moldova not to immediately align with the sanctions, in order to avoid a harsh response from the Russian Federation.
