Hungary will not arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he enters Hungarian territory

Hungary will not arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he were to enter Hungarian territory, as there would be no legal basis for doing so, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's chief of staff Gergely Gulyas said, Agerpres reports.

According to him, Vladimir Putin cannot be arrested in Hungary because the country has not promulgated the Rome Statute.

Hungary has signed and ratified the Rome Statute, the document that established the International Criminal Court (ICC), which on Friday issued an arrest warrant for current Russian President Vladimir Putin on charges of illegally deporting thousands of Ukrainian children.

The official said the Hungarian government "has not yet taken a final position" on the arrest warrant issued for Putin, but said such decisions were not the happiest as they were leading to escalation rather than peace.
