Belarus admits it will host Russian nuclear weapons on its territory
Belarus admits it will host Russian nuclear weapons on its territory. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Minsk, this decision was motivated by "NATO's aggressive actions" in the region.
The other day, Vladimir Putin announced that Russia will finish, by July 1, the construction of a silo for tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, where it already has ten aircraft capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons.
NATO reacted immediately, criticizing Moscow for what it called "dangerous and irresponsible nuclear rhetoric," but said it saw no change in Russia's nuclear posture.
The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrel, qualified the Kremlin's statement as "a threat to European security". Ukrainian officials also reacted, noting that "the Kremlin has taken Belarus as a nuclear hostage" and urgently called for an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council.
The spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that Beijing does not approve of Russia's decision to place nuclear weapons in Belarus, according to international media.
Lithuania has announced that it will seek new sanctions against Moscow and Minsk.
