Nicu Popescu: The Republic of Moldova must urgently interconnect to the electricity grid with Romania

The Republic of Moldova urgently needs an electrical interconnection with Romania, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nicu Popescu, in an interview for Reuters, stating that infrastructure projects are vital for the stability of our country.

The head of Moldovan diplomacy, Nicu Popescu, emphasized that, in times of war, the same bureaucratic procedures as in times of peace can no longer be applied, and the Republic of Moldova suffers from the war in Ukraine. Nicu Popescu said that there is international political and economic support for such projects, but their implementation procedures are too slow. The deadline for the interconnector with Romania, partially financed by EU funds, is 2026.

The official stated that infrastructure projects are vital for the stability of the Republic of Moldova, such as the electricity interconnector that would connect the country's electricity network directly with Romania, bypassing Ukraine, which would diversify and ensure a more secure energy supply.

During the meetings in Berlin with German officials, Nicu Popescu emphasized that the Republic of Moldova hopes, at least by the end of the year, to receive a clear answer that EU accession negotiations can begin, during which time Chisinau will speed up the implementation of the proposed reforms from Brussels.

According to the official, citizens of the Republic of Moldova will benefit, like European citizens, from free roaming for mobile phones and the offers of the Erasmus program, which allows student exchange.
