The North Atlantic Alliance is ready to provide more support for the Republic of Moldova

The North Atlantic Alliance is ready to offer more support to the Republic of Moldova in joint projects, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said today at a press conference held in Brussels. According to the official, the allies are in favor of increasing the budget that finances support activities for the Republic of Moldova.

"The NATO allies have clearly conveyed that we will boost support for the partners that are under the threat of Moscow, among them the Republic of Moldova. That is why I welcome the fact that the allies provide support to the Republic of Moldova in various ways. I also met with President Maia Sandu and conveyed the same message, that the allies are ready to do more. We're in a partnership program and we're constantly trying to see how we can do more within it."

The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, said that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova must be respected, in the context of the war in Ukraine, but also of the presence of Russian troops in the Transnistrian region. Meanwhile, President Maia Sandu declared, in Bucharest, during a meeting with the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, and the Romanian President, Klaus Iohannis, that our country is making efforts to strengthen the capacity of the defense system.

"We need help and we are talking with partners to achieve more in a short period of time. The Republic of Moldova has increased spending to strengthen its defense system, but obviously we cannot do miracles overnight and we need support, including for strengthening the defense system", said the head of state.

We mention that the budget of the Ministry of Defense, in 2023, was increased by 649.9 million lei. Thus, according to the document, the allocations for the defense institution are 1,697.1 million lei, which represents 0.55% of GDP.
