Maia Sandu: Moldova to abandon part of CIS agreements
The Republic of Moldova will abandon some of the agreements signed with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), President Maia Sandu said last night during a broadcast on Jurnal TV. Since the establishment of the CIS, agreements have been signed, which today are useless. Currently, the Government is evaluating them, after which they will come up with proposals to withdraw from some documents, Maia Sandu said.
According to the President, "hundreds" of agreements have been signed in the last 30 years. "Every year documents were signed, many of which were useless. Now all of them are being analysed".
At the same time, Maia Sandu recalled that Moldova's strategic goal is European integration: "I strongly believe that Moldova can become a member of the European Union by the end of this decade".
Earlier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu said that the Moldovan government has started the process of denouncing the agreements signed within the CIS. The opportunity to remain in the Community is being considered. Chisinau is concerned about Russia's attempts to destabilise the situation in the republic. Moscow denies the accusations.
