U.S. estimates 20,000 Russian servicemen have been killed in Ukraine since December to date

US intelligence estimates that 20,000 Russian fighters have been killed in Ukraine since December and another 80,000 have been wounded in fighting, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told a news conference Monday night.

He said half of those killed belonged to the Wagner mercenary group, most of them soldiers "thrown into the fighting in Bahmut without sufficient training or proper military command." "The bottom line is that Russia's offensive has backfired," said John Kirby.

On the other hand, the US official declined to comment on the losses suffered by Ukraine, which is backed by a US-led Western coalition. It's up to them to talk about it or not, the US official explained.

Most of the fighting in recent weeks has been concentrated in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, particularly in the town of Bahmut.
