The Department for the Integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union could be created by autumn in Bucharest

Romanian authorities intend to set up a new institution under the Bucharest Parliament, called the Department for the Integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union, Romanian MP Daniel Gheorghe, who is also co-chair of the Joint Committee for European Integration of the Romanian and Moldovan Parliaments, told Radio Moldova.

According to Romanian MP Daniel Gheorghe, the new department will start its work by the end of this year and will employ 15 people. The newly created department will provide support in the process of European accession, on technical aspects, adjustment of legislation, as well as in the process of negotiation and adoption of the acquis communautaire, said Daniel Gheorghe.

"The institution will operate during the period in which the Republic of Moldova has the status of candidate country, until the accession process to the European Union is completed. After that, it will be abolished. This institution is intended to provide expertise, consultation and advice during the period in which the Republic of Moldova is on the road to EU membership. We hope it will be as quick and smooth as possible", concluded the Romanian MEP.

The department will be headed by a chairman, with the rank of secretary of state, who would be appointed for a four-year term.

The Department for the Integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union will monitor, at the request of the Moldovan authorities, the state of implementation of the negotiating chapters, provide specialist expertise and draw up studies and other documents.

The new entity will collaborate with the ministries of the Romanian Government and will request from the archives of the ministries documents on the negotiation chapters of Romania's accession to the European Union and the adoption of the acquis communautaire, and then send them to the Republic of Moldova.

The initiators of the project noted that the European Commission's latest assessment of Moldova's compliance with the acquis communautaire reveals delays in some key areas for the continuation and completion of the accession process.

The European Commission will present its first report on Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia this autumn.
