Maia Sandu, about the elections in the Gagauz autonomy: I prefer not to comment until a final decision

The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, stated that she will not comment on the elections of the Bascan from the Gagauz Autonomous Region until a final decision is announced. The head of state declared on the "Bună seara" show on Moldova 1 that the authorities want free and fair elections.

"I prefer not to comment on what's going on there until a final decision, because I don't want there to be speculation on the things I'm going to say. Of course we want free and fair elections and for the citizens' vote to be a genuine vote. Chisinau is not going to choose the leadership there for the citizens of the autonomy. But the elections must be free and fair, there are some lessons we must learn. The conclusions I would prefer to make public after the trial is over," said Maia Sandu.

In this context, the president called the inhabitants of the region, who love their country, to come to the Great National Assembly Square on Sunday, because "the European integration project is a project for development, the project for security and peace".

We remind you that the second round of elections for the position of Bascan took place on Sunday, May 14, in the Gagauz autonomy. According to the local electoral authority, the candidate of the Sor Party, Evghenia Guțul, would have accumulated the most votes.

On Monday, May 22, the Comrat Court of Appeal will rule on the legality of the election, given that the legal authorities are conducting criminal prosecutions in the case of voter corruption, and the Central Electoral Commission found that all eight candidates used undeclared money in electoral campaign and elections.
