Parliament took note of the resolution of the "European Moldova" Assembly
The draft resolution on the resolution of the "European Moldova" Assembly, adopted in the Great National Assembly Square on 21 May 2023, was approved by MPs. The decision, which was taken in plenary today, sparked conflicting discussions between PAS and BCS MPs. While the parliamentary majority says citizens want Moldova to raise its living standards to European standards, the opposition says a referendum was needed.
Parliament's Deputy Speaker Mihai Popșoi said from the central gallery that MPs had a "moral and legal obligation" not only to take note of the resolution but to give it legal and political form by voting on it.
"In particular, in the period that will follow to implement step by step these recommendations, I would even say orders that were acclaimed, supported at the European Integration Assembly on 21 May. That is why, dear colleagues, I ask that we unanimously support this declaration, this resolution of Parliament, because European integration is in the interest of every citizen. Now, we, regardless of our political views, when we go to European Union member countries, cannot fail to notice the qualitative difference in the quality of life in all areas. It is only common sense that this desire supported by the Great Assembly on Sunday should also find support among its elected members in the Moldovan Parliament".
For her part, Diana Caraman, a member of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists faction, said that in Europe a referendum is the best way to find out people's opinions on a given subject.
"If the country's leadership really wants to know the opinion of citizens, why doesn't the leadership hold a referendum? In Europe it is the best way. In the civilized world they hold referendums when they want the opinion of the people and they spend less money on them than you have spent from the state budget to hold this event. Resolutions are passed at many protests and I hope we vote for them all."
"I think that the question of the referendum does not make sense in the current context or, unfortunately, we are not on the threshold of accession. We very much hope to start negotiations as soon as possible", replied Mihai Popșoi.
On 21 May, the "European Moldova" National Assembly was held in the Grand Assembly Square. The event, attended by over 80 thousand people, adopted a resolution. According to the document, the European Union is the only way that can bring our country stability in the face of challenges and the only chance for development of the Republic of Moldova.
