Dan Perciun: Only 25% of young teachers choose to work in schools

Moldova's education system is short of 2,000 teachers. At the same time, only a quarter of pedagogy graduates choose to work in our country's schools, according to the new minister of education and research, Dan Perciun. At the same time, the authorities aim to double the number of young specialists in the country's educational institutions.

With the shortage of teachers on the rise, one of the Education and Research Ministry's priorities for the next academic year is to double the number of young teachers, Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun has announced. The official stressed that his institution will develop a series of facilities to motivate young people to work in schools.

"We will present proposals after the consultations next week. We are also talking about scholarships and additional facilities for the best teachers. At the same time, we are also talking about attracting high school graduates to choose pedagogy as a matter of principle through certain incentive tools, and overall we are talking about a bigger and better targeted package of benefits that will incentivise young people to go into pedagogy and, after graduation, to work in schools," said Dan Perciun.

The new Education Minister's priorities for the next academic year also include improving the educational process, modernising school infrastructure and digitising the education system.

According to the new amendments to the Education Code, young pedagogues, graduates of higher education institutions will receive an allowance of 200 thousand lei for the first five years of activity. Previously, the allowance was 120 thousand lei, to be paid in three instalments of 40 thousand lei each.

For graduates of teacher training colleges, the allowance will be increased from 96,000 to 160,000 lei.
