Moldova's European model of development a guarantee of security and prosperity
The European model of development is a guarantee of security and prosperity, which the Republic of Moldova should have adopted immediately after declaring independence, according to participants in the public debate with the title "The Price and Effects of Independence", organised by the IPN Agency. In their opinion, in the early 1990s there was no political class to promote this goal.
The Republic of Moldova did not have a political elite to promote democratic values and missed the chance to capitalise on all the opportunities that emerged after independence, including setting the development vector, said Dr. Ion Varta, a historian and former MP in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.
"Our political decisions were not up to par because in the first stage in this struggle, our writers joined. But they did not have the ability of a politician, they did not have the exercise of political struggle, that's why our movement from the start was doomed to record certain failures. However, we do not have the right to diminish the huge importance that ordinary people had who supported this goal, and thanks to them it was possible to achieve independence in August 1991," Varta said.
In turn, Dr. Virgiliu Pâslariuc, a historian, university professor and MP in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, said that the application for accession was signed by the Republic of Moldova very late. In his opinion, our country had this chance in the 1990s, as well as in the 2000s, but it was missed.
"The application for accession was signed by the Republic of Moldova very late. We had this chance in the 1990s, but we wasted it. Later, in the 2000s, due to the declared pro-European alliances, but which were occupied with other things, we missed this chance again. Now, after 30 years, it is time to do what Romania did in the early 2000s. This model of development is also a guarantee of security and prosperity for our people," Pâslariuc said.
The European Commission Report on the fulfilment of the nine conditions for the launch of accession negotiations with the EU will be presented by the end of October.
