Moldovan President: Transnistrian conflict could be resolved peacefully if Ukraine wins war with Russia

Moldovan President Maia Sandu said on Thursday that the Transnistrian conflict could be resolved peacefully if Ukraine wins the war with Russia.

Sandu made the statement at the Diaspora Congress being held in Chisinau. She said that the Moldovan government's main task at present is to maintain peace throughout the country, especially in the risk zone of the Transnistrian region.

"We enjoy peace thanks to the Ukrainian army," Sandu said. "And we too have done everything during this period to prevent our country from being drawn into war, to maintain order and peace in our society, to combat forgeries."

Sandu reiterated that the Moldovan government sees only peaceful solutions to the Transnistrian conflict. She said that there may be a geopolitical opportunity to resolve the conflict peacefully if Ukraine wins the war and recovers its territories.

"There are also international experiences and we have clarity on how these things should be organized in the situation where this geopolitical opportunity arises," Sandu said.

However, Sandu also stressed that the Transnistrian problem does not have an immediate solution and will be solved gradually. She said that the reintegration process must take place in such a way that it does not further weaken the Moldovan state and democratic processes.
