Ukrainian PM calls for more weapons to drive out Russian forces
Ukraine's Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal has called on Western partners to send more ammunition to the country in order to achieve significant success in its counteroffensive against Russian forces.
In an interview with Digi24.ro, Shmyhal said that Ukraine is moving according to plan in the counteroffensive, but that the pace is slower than desired due to the need to protect civilian lives. He also said that it is important to destroy Russian infrastructure and logistics in order to create better conditions for the counteroffensive.
"We are asking all partners to send us more weapons," Shmyhal said. "It is important to destroy the infrastructure and logistics of the Russian army, so that we have better conditions for the counteroffensive."
Shmyhal noted that since the beginning of the counteroffensive, which was launched two months ago, Ukrainian forces have liberated more than 50% of the territory that was occupied by Russia. He also said that Ukrainian troops are continuing to conduct counteroffensive operations in the directions of Berdyansk and Melitopol.
The Ukrainian government has been requesting more ammunition from Western partners since the beginning of the war. In recent weeks, the United States has announced that it will send an additional $800 million in military aid to Ukraine, including artillery, ammunition, and armoured vehicles.
The Ukrainian counteroffensive has been making progress in recent weeks, but it is still too early to say whether it will be successful in driving Russian forces out of the country.
