Pope Francis: Reduce military spending, increase humanitarian aid
Pope Francis has called for a decrease in arms spending, saying that this would free up more money for humanitarian causes, DPA and Digi24 broadcast on Saturday.
The head of the Catholic Church made the appeal in a message posted on his Twitter account on Saturday.
"It is our responsibility to participate in the eradication of hatred and violence from the hearts of people," he wrote. "Let us encourage the renunciation of arms so that there is a reduction in military spending and we can take care of humanitarian needs."
Pope Francis did not specify the context for his message, but August 19 is designated World Humanitarian Day by the United Nations.
The UN estimates that 274 million people around the world need humanitarian assistance, including food, water, shelter, and medical care.
