Government to invest in education, increase teachers' salaries

The basic salaries of teachers in Moldova will increase starting January 1, 2024, Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun announced on Facebook. Perciun said that the current salaries are insufficient, but that the government is committed to increasing them responsibly.

"We know that the salaries are not enough today. When we talk about significant increases of 30, 40, or 50 percent, we must understand that these will not happen overnight. But if we work together, we can make sure that teachers are paid what they deserve," Perciun said.

Perciun also said that Moldova allocates 5.8% of its GDP to education, which is more than the European average. However, he said that the government is still working to find ways to increase funding for education.

Ghenadie Donos, president of the Trade Union Federation of Education and Science, said on Radio Moldova that the average salary in education should be equal to that in the economy and at least 7% of the country's gross domestic product should go to education.
