The agreement, which is still under negotiation, would allow WFP to continue its operations in Moldova for an indefinite period, subject to the completion of assistance projects, and to enjoy certain privileges and immunities.

WFP began its operations in Moldova in 2022. Over the course of a year, WFP provided financial assistance to over 200,000 Moldovan citizens and over 50,000 Ukrainian refugees.

Specifically, over 2.5 million meals were provided in temporary accommodation centres for refugees, and Moldovan families hosting Ukrainian refugees received financial assistance.

WFP also supported over 56,000 Moldovan families with low incomes during the cold winter of 2022-2023.

"This agreement is a key step in our efforts to strengthen cooperation with WFP and ensure that food is available to all those in need in Moldova," said Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu.

WFP is the largest humanitarian organisation providing international food assistance, operating in over 120 countries or regions.
