Moldovan education minister announces new program to support teachers

Moldovan Education and Research Minister Dan Perciuc has pledged to address the problems in the country's education system, but he said it will take time and resources.

Speaking at a ceremony to honour the winners of the national "Teacher of the Year" competition, Perciuc said his ministry is committed to ensuring good working conditions for teachers, promoting education publicly, and making necessary, but unpopular decisions.

"We need to learn to appreciate the good things, to be proud of them, to talk about them publicly, and to celebrate those who have results and work hard," Perciuc said. "This does not mean hiding problems under the rug, it means learning to appreciate people of value and ensuring change not only through criticism, but also by evoking role models to follow. I want to commit myself that whatever changes we make, we will look for solutions that are beneficial for everyone. We will call things by their name even if they are not popular things. We will take on difficult decisions, because most of the time, changes that really produce results in the long run are not easy in the short term, but they are necessary."

Perciuc recently announced the launch of the pilot program "Invest in Teachers," through which over 2,500 teachers from 50 schools across the country will receive free training. The program is funded by the government with 6 million lei (about 300,000 euro).
