Zelensky: UN is 'ineffective|\', demands Russia be suspended
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a scathing rebuke of the United Nations on Wednesday, calling for major reform and demanding that Russia's veto power be revoked.
In a speech to the UN Security Council, Zelensky accused Russia of using its veto power to block efforts to stop the war in Ukraine. He also said that the current UN system is unfair and undemocratic, as it gives too much power to a small number of countries.
Zelensky called for the UN Security Council to be expanded to include more countries from Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. He also said that the General Assembly should be given the power to override vetoes when a member state is engaged in aggression.
"The right of veto in the hands of the aggressor is blocking the UN," Zelensky said. "It is impossible to stop this war because all efforts are blocked by the veto of the aggressor or by those who support the aggressor."
Zelensky's speech is likely to reignite debate about the future of the UN. The war in Ukraine has exposed the weaknesses of the UN's current system, and Zelensky's calls for reform are likely to gain support from many countries.
