Ukraine, US to partner on 155mm artillery shell production

In a move to bolster its defence capabilities and reduce dependence on Western aid, Ukraine has announced a joint venture with two American companies to produce 155mm artillery shells.

This vital ammunition type has been crucial in the ongoing war against Russia, and the agreement signifies a significant step in Ukraine's efforts to secure its own supply.

The demand for 155mm shells has seen a dramatic surge since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. To compensate for depleted stockpiles, the United States and its allies have provided over 2 million shells to Ukraine. However, concerns about potential fluctuations in Western deliveries have prompted Ukraine to prioritise domestic production.

"We have signed agreements with two leading American companies to jointly manufacture 155mm ammunition within Ukraine," confirmed Oleksandr Kamyshin, Ukraine's Minister of Strategic Industries, during a televised address.

While expressing optimism about the long-term impact of this partnership, Kamyshin acknowledged the lengthy implementation process, anticipating several years before production begins.

Beyond securing its own ammunition supply, Ukraine aims to leverage joint ventures with international arms manufacturers to revitalise its domestic defence industry. This initiative aligns with President Volodymyr Zelensky's vision, expressed on Wednesday, of Ukraine transitioning from solely relying on allied military aid to becoming a future security provider for its neighbours.

The agreement with the American companies is a significant step forward, promising to create thousands of jobs and boost Ukraine's economic stability. It also grants the country greater autonomy in its defence planning and reduces dependence on external assistance.
