Holiday feasts: Moldovans urged to eat smart, stay active
With holiday tables laden with traditional delights, Moldovan nutritionists urge moderation instead of excessive feasting.
While appreciating the culinary customs of the season, experts like Dr. Luminița Suveică highlight the importance of mindful eating for good health.
Moderation, Not Deprivation:
"Variety is key," emphasised Dr. Suveică in a recent interview with Radio Moldova. "Think fruits, vegetables, whole grains – they form the foundation of a healthy holiday menu." Instead of succumbing to calorie-dense temptations, she recommends balancing traditional dishes like pork, fish, and poultry with fresh produce.
Beyond the Feast:
Dr. Suveică suggests mindful practices around holiday meals. Smaller, spaced-out meals are preferable to large, prolonged gatherings. Introducing vegetables to traditionally heavy dishes, like adding parsley and carrots to polenta, enhances flavour and promotes digestion. Opting for dessert options like fruit salads adds a nutritious counterpoint to sweet treats.
Movement and Hydration:
Getting up and moving after each meal isn't just a courtesy to fellow diners; it can aid digestion and prevent the discomfort of overindulgence. Staying hydrated throughout the festivities with water and unsweetened beverages further supports digestive health and prevents overloading the body.
Responsible Indulgence:
While enjoying holiday gatherings is encouraged, responsible alcohol consumption remains crucial. Dr. Suveică reminds all to remain mindful of drink intake to avoid compromising health and safety.
