Iohannis: We are with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine in the EU accession negotiation process
The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, praised the Moldovan authorities for the way they managed and limited the impact of the war in Ukraine and other related effects, also appreciating the efforts of Moldova and Ukraine to join the European Union, an objective supported by Romania.
"Among the countries in the region, the Republic of Moldova felt the most the impact of Russia's war against Ukraine, but also of Russian hybrid actions to destabilize it. The authorities in Chisinau had limited domestic resources to manage the overlapping crises they faced and advance the European integration process. However, they acted energetically and showed great political will to irreversibly place the Republic of Moldova on the road to the European Union.
I am glad to see that the efforts of the Republic of Moldova, as well as those of Ukraine, were recognized at the meeting of the European Council in December 2023. The decision to start accession negotiations to the European Union represented a strategic objective for Romania, which I supported with all my might. Romania is and will be with the two states also in the negotiation process, because we know very well its complexity, but also the benefits for the citizens. It is crucial that the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine continue to receive financial support and expertise for institutional consolidation and the investment environment, which will create stability and prosperity", emphasized Klaus Iohannis, during the annual meeting with the heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Romania.
He said that this meeting is the last in this framework, considering that this year he will complete his second and last term as head of state. "Without a doubt, in the last 10 years, Romania has fully affirmed its European and Euro-Atlantic vocation, consolidating its external profile as a responsible, reliable and constructive, committed, predictable and coherent state", said Klaus Iohannis.
