Slovakia pledges full support for €50 billion Ukraine aid, deepens ties
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal secured crucial commitments from Slovakia on Wednesday, dispelling any concerns about potential roadblocks for the EU's €50 billion aid package and forging closer ties between the two nations.
Following a productive meeting with his Slovak counterpart, Robert Fico, Shmyhal confirmed Slovakia's full support for the "Ukraine Facility" program, guaranteeing unimpeded access to the vital financial assistance. Additionally, Slovakia pledged not to hinder Ukraine's purchase of weapons and equipment from its domestic companies, further bolstering Ukrainian efforts on the frontline.
Shmyhal expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Slovak people for their unwavering solidarity, stating, "We are grateful to the Slovak people, who are helping Ukraine and Ukrainians in these difficult times."
Beyond immediate financial support, the two leaders solidified a comprehensive framework for enhanced collaboration. A key highlight is Slovakia's participation in supplying equipment for constructing Ukrainian defence lines, significantly bolstering the nation's defensive capabilities.
Moreover, Slovakia unequivocally pledged its unwavering support for Ukraine's aspirations to join the European Union. This reinforces Ukraine's path towards integration and underscores the growing solidarity within the European family.
The commitment to fostering security and prosperity extends beyond mere words. Both nations agreed to maintain close cooperation on various fronts, including joint efforts to ensure global food security and enhance the export potential of Ukrainian agricultural products.
To solidify these promises, Shmyhal and Fico signed a joint declaration, setting a new chapter in bilateral relations grounded in "trust and mutual respect." This landmark document reaffirms unwavering support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty within its internationally recognized borders.
Furthermore, the declaration designates a Slovak vice prime minister specifically for the Ukraine recovery plan, underscoring Slovakia's dedicated involvement in rebuilding its war-torn neighbour. It also promotes active Slovak participation in demining the affected Ukrainian territory, laying the groundwork for safe reconstruction and resettlement.
The successful meeting and subsequent declaration leave no doubt about Slovakia's steadfast commitment to Ukraine. While the war casts a long shadow, this renewed and expanded partnership illuminates a path towards peace, security, and shared prosperity for both nations.
