Liverpool inferno: Abandoned building burns

A colossal fire ripped through an abandoned four-story building in Liverpool's Everton district on Sunday, prompting the evacuation of nearby residents and casting a pall of smoke over the city, The Independent has reported.

The inferno was so intense it was visible from across the River Mersey and even shrouded Goodison Park, home to the city's beloved Everton Football Club, during a game.

"The smoke was shocking," admitted a local resident to the BBC, "but I think people who live in Everton weren't necessarily surprised. There are a lot of abandoned buildings that worry people around here."

Concerns about the stability of the ageing structure led firefighters to urge onlookers to stay clear and residents to shut their windows and doors. Classified as a "major incident" by emergency services, the blaze was finally extinguished by Saturday evening, allowing evacuees to return home.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire, which thankfully resulted in no reported injuries.
