UN Appeals for Calm Amid US-Iran Tensions in Middle East

At a UN Security Council meeting on Monday, a senior official urged "all parties" to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East following US airstrikes in Syria and Iraq, Agerpres reports

Russia and China criticised the US actions, alleging they exacerbate regional instability.

UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo stressed the need for "active cooperation" to prevent further escalation, acknowledging the strikes' impact on "regional peace and security."

Following a January 28 attack on a US base in Jordan attributed to pro-Iranian groups, the US launched strikes against 85 targets in Syria and Iraq, targeting Iran's Revolutionary Guards and affiliated groups. While defending the strikes as retaliation, the US faces accusations of violating territorial integrity.

Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia argued the strikes aimed to "fuel the conflict" and maintain US dominance, while his Chinese counterpart, Jun Zhang, expressed concern about "exacerbating the vicious cycle of retaliations." Syria, Iraq, and Iran have also condemned the US actions.
