Despite this, forecasts for agricultural crop harvests remain positive, according to representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry.

To address potential natural disasters, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry is taking several key actions. These include planting forest strips, expanding hail protection areas in various localities, initiating artificial rain projects, and constructing irrigation systems. Vasile Șarban, Secretary of State for the institution, spoke to Radio Moldova about the initiatives, noting that the forecasts for this year are relatively good.

“Regarding resilience, we still have ongoing projects. We are focusing on establishing forest protection strips. These, like oases in the desert, naturally attract precipitation. Additionally, we have a policy to develop irrigation systems. Three projects are underway for central irrigation systems in the North, South, and South-East regions. Our goal is to rehabilitate these three irrigation systems and increase the irrigable area by approximately 5,000 hectares," said Vasile Șarban.

Farmers also anticipate good harvests this year. However, they express concerns about rising production costs. Ion Moroi, a farmer from the Fălești district with 40 years of experience, highlights this challenge.

“Winter crops and rapeseed look encouraging. Recent precipitation has been beneficial, and the fields appear healthier than in previous years. While there is some moisture in the soil, we hope for sufficient precipitation and a good harvest. In my view, the only way to address this situation is to increase yields per hectare. Otherwise, Moldovan agriculture will suffer due to production costs," said Ion Moroi.

Currently, the Republic of Moldova has 88 irrigation systems, of which only 24 are functional. The authorities are committed to rehabilitating three centralised irrigation stations in Ștefan Vodă, Briceni, and Etulia to improve farmers' access to water resources.
