The men were walking towards the Moldova-Romania border when they were spotted by authorities using drones and thermal imaging systems. The individuals then tried to flee and hide in nearby bushes, but they were apprehended after a brief pursuit.

During the arrest, the individuals resisted complying with police orders. One of the men managed to swim across the Prut River into Romania. Romanian border police were notified about the incident and initiated a search on both sides of the river.

Five of the Cubans were arrested in Moldova, while the sixth was apprehended in Romania. He was subsequently returned to Moldova under the readmission agreement between the two countries.

The men, aged between 21 and 53, were all in possession of temporary asylum seeker documents issued by Moldovan authorities. The Moldovan Border Police are investigating the incident as an attempted illegal border crossing.

The six Cubans are currently being held in custody by the General Inspectorate for Migration. They will be detained for 30 days before being deported from Moldova.
