Romania Sends Patriot System to Bolster Ukraine's Defence

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, sent a message of thanks to Romania and the leader at Cotroceni, Klaus Iohannis, for the decision to send a Patriot air defence system to Ukraine.

According to the leader from Kyiv, this contribution will strengthen the air shield and help Ukraine better protect its people and critical infrastructure from Russian aerial terror.

"It is important that this step strengthens security not only in Ukraine but in our entire region and in Europe. By ending Russian terror now, Ukraine prevents potential aggression against Moldova, Romania, the Baltic states, and all our neighbours. It is essential that Ukraine has the necessary tools to defeat Russian terror now, so that no one else has to face Russia's aggressive actions on a larger scale in the future," said Zelensky.

The decision to send a Patriot air defence system to Ukraine was made by the Supreme Council of Defense of Romania, presided over by President Klaus Iohannis, on Thursday, June 20.

"Given the significant deterioration of the security situation in Ukraine due to Russia's constant and massive attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, especially the energy sector, as well as the regional consequences of this situation, including Romania's security, in close coordination with the Allies, the members of the Council decided to donate a Patriot system to Ukraine," stated the Council in a communiqué quoted by the Romanian press.

The Patriot system represents Romania's largest acquisition since the Revolution. The Ministry of National Defense paid 4 billion dollars for 7 systems. So far, the United States of America has delivered 4, and the other 3 systems should arrive in the neighbouring country by 2027.

The first Patriot system became operational in Romania in November last year, and the second became operational on Friday, June 14. The third will be ready by the end of the year, according to the authorities in Bucharest, and the fourth will be combat-ready at the beginning of next year.
