NATO Intensifies Support for Ukraine, Appoints Senior Official
NATO announced on Wednesday that it has appointed a high-ranking official to lead the alliance's efforts in Ukraine as part of a broader initiative to intensify support for Kiev in its fight against Russia's invasion, according to Reuters.
Patrick Turner, a British official who has held senior positions within NATO, will serve as the principal representative of the alliance in Ukraine, according to Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
"I am confident that he will excel in this important role, as NATO continues to intensify its support for Ukraine," said Stoltenberg.
"I am truly honoured to be appointed NATO's senior representative in Ukraine. I look forward to leading the NATO Representation and working very closely with Ukrainian authorities, NATO allies, and partners to provide NATO's support to Ukraine," wrote Turner on X.
Previously, Turner served as Deputy Secretary General for Operations within NATO and Deputy Secretary General for Defense Policy and Planning. He has also held leadership positions in the public administration of the United Kingdom.
At the NATO Summit in Washington, allies agreed to establish assistance and training for NATO security in Ukraine to better coordinate the provision of military equipment and training to Ukraine. This builds on NATO's unprecedented support for Ukraine in its defence against Russian aggression. Allies also announced a long-term security assistance commitment for Ukraine, with a minimum threshold of 40 billion euros in the next year, to provide sustainable levels of security assistance to ensure Ukraine's success.
