Moldova's key referendum on EU accession: What you should know
President Maia Sandu has called on citizens to participate in the referendum scheduled for October 20, regardless of their stance on Moldova's potential accession to the European Union.
This appeal was made by the head of state on the evening of August 19. Maia Sandu emphasised that the decision to hold the referendum is rooted in the belief that the people should have the authority to determine their own destiny.
“The referendum is not for me; it is for all the citizens of this country. Each of us will have the opportunity to express our views on October 20 and indicate our preferred direction. Whether you support Moldova’s accession to the European Union or not, it is important to participate in the referendum. Do not allow others to decide this matter for you. Exercise your right to vote on October 20 and, regardless of your choice, express your opinion freely and sincerely in the voting booth about the future path you envision for Moldova,” the head of state concluded.
It is important to note that the constitutional referendum concerning EU accession will be held on October 20, coinciding with the presidential elections. In this autumn plebiscite, citizens will be asked, "Do you support amending the Constitution to facilitate the Republic of Moldova's accession to the European Union?"
The proposed constitutional amendment includes adding two new paragraphs to the Supreme Law, reaffirming the European identity of Moldova’s people and the irreversibility of the country’s European trajectory. Additionally, integration into the European Union will be established as a strategic objective of the state.
