This announcement was made in Brussels following a meeting with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

Victor Negrescu, 39, recently assumed the role of Vice President of the European Parliament and possesses extensive political experience. “I bring experience, but I am also a young individual who can help the Commission engage more effectively with young people who support the European project,” Negrescu stated to POLITICO.

A graduate of universities in Paris and Brussels, Negrescu began his career as a journalist before becoming an MEP in 2014. He has focused on issues such as the EU budget, digitalization, and cultural matters. Romania is seeking an economic portfolio for Negrescu, who has emphasised his strong support for President von der Leyen’s emphasis on investments.

Negrescu’s imminent appointment reflects another EU country’s decision not to heed von der Leyen’s request to choose between a male and a female commissioner to form a gender-balanced team. To date, 15 men have been proposed compared to six women, including von der Leyen herself.

“We have already appointed two female commissioners: Corina Crețu, Commissioner for Regional Policy, and Adina Vălean, Commissioner for Transport,” said Negrescu. “We would like to see more countries making similar efforts. It would be beneficial to offer young people the opportunity to join the Commission. This is also crucial for ensuring equal opportunities.”
