Orthodox Christians celebrate Saint Dumitru today
Old-rite Orthodox Christians celebrate, on Tuesday, November 8, Saint Demetrius the Great, the Fountain of Myrrh.
Demetrius or Dumitru, the son of the Roman proconsul from Thessaloniki, lived during the time of the emperors Diocletian and Galerius. He was secretly baptised by his parents, who were Christians. Dimitrie became a preacher, while continuing his military career. Because he blessed a young soldier to face the vandal Lie, who was killing Christians without mercy, Saint Dumitru was killed by order of the emperor, and his body was left to wild beasts. He was canonised as a great martyr.
Shortly after the death of Saint Demetrius, a basilica was built on his tomb in Thessaloniki. One hundred years later, during the construction of a new temple, the relics of the holy martyr were discovered. Several times it was attempted to move them to Constantinople, but each time the Saint mysteriously showed his will to remain the protector of his native city.
In many localities in the Republic of Moldova, Feast is celebrated. People gather to participate in religious services and festive events organized on this occasion. From rich meals prepared in households to concerts in the center of the village.
Saint Demetrius is known as the protector of those in need, and prayers to him are considered to be of great help.
