Jānis Mažeiks, after the visit to Tiraspol: EU support cannot advance without reforms

The EU Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Jānis Mažeiks, visited the Transnistrian region on Thursday. The diplomat, accompanied by the team of the Delegation of the EU, visited communities, schools and businesses, reaffirming the European Union's commitment to dialogue, stability and peace, informs eu4moldova.eu.

In Ribnita, Jānis Mažeiks spoke with students, teachers and principals of the Romanian-language lyceum “Evrika” and the Russian-language school “A. K. Belitchenko”. The restoration of the original premises of the Theoretical Lyceum “Evrika” remains essential for ensuring an adequate learning environment and addressing long-standing educational challenges, reads the cited source.

During a visit to one of the largest enterprises in the region, the Moldovan Metallurgical Plant (MMZ), the Ambassador noted that its activities are still suspended due to the energy crisis aggravated by Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in November 2024. The Delegation team discussed with the plant’s management its capacity to adapt and operate in a liberalized energy market.

In Tiraspol, the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova met with Vadim Krasnoselski. The discussions focused on the energy and economic crisis, the Transnistrian conflict settlement process, and the human rights situation in the region.

The visit also highlighted the €20 million emergency assistance package provided to the left bank in early February—a concrete demonstration of the EU’s support for the people of the region. Another €60 million remains available, but its release depends on clear progress in respecting human rights, fundamental freedoms, and a fair system of energy pricing.

“The European Union stands ready to provide support, but without reforms, support cannot be advanced,” reads the statement of the Delegation of the European Union.
