Trump administration considers delay for Romania Visa Waiver entry

The Trump administration is considering a potential delay in Romania’s admission to the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, amid stricter immigration policies and heightened border security measures.

Diplomatic sources cited by G4Media suggest that the delay could last approximately two months due to technical reasons.

However, the Romanian Embassy in Washington and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) have stated that there is currently no official communication regarding any change to the implementation date.

“The Romanian Embassy in Washington is in active dialogue with U.S. authorities and maintains direct contact with the Department of Homeland Security, which is responsible for overseeing Romania’s admission to the U.S. Visa Waiver Program. There is no official communication at this time regarding a change to the original date of entry into the Visa Waiver Program,” said Romanian Ambassador to the U.S., Andrei Muraru, on Thursday.

Currently, the official program website does not specify an exact date for lifting tourist visa requirements. However, earlier statements indicated that the change was expected to take effect “around March 31, 2025.”

At this time, the program’s official website states that the date for lifting the tourist visa requirement for Romania will be announced in due course.

The decision to admit Romania to the program was officially confirmed in January at an event held at Victoria Palace. At that time, U.S. Ambassador to Romania Kathleen Kavalec stated that this step would strengthen the economic and political relations between the two countries.

MAE also stated that, as of approximately March 31, 2025, Romanian citizens traveling to the United States for short visits, whether for tourism or business, would no longer need a visa.
