The dependence of the Transnistrian region on the right bank of the Dniester is growing, says Oleg Serebrian
The dependence of the Transnistrian region on the right bank of the Dniester is growing, as the constitutional authorities in Chisinau are the only corridor of communication with the left bank of the Dniester in many ways, including economically. The statement was made by Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian on a TVR Moldova programme.
"Some will say that there is an interdependence, in the sense that the Republic of Moldova remains largely dependent on electricity produced at the Cuciurgan power plant. But this dependence is very temporary and this is known in Tiraspol, Moscow and elsewhere. This high-voltage line will be built to link the Republic of Moldova, Romania and Ukraine. Also, if I am not mistaken, it is a project, it will lead to the cancellation of this dependence on the left bank. Instead, the dependence of the left bank will increase even more".
Moldova currently obtains more than 50% of its electricity needs from the Cuciurgan power plant. This was made possible following the signing of a contract between Energocom and the Cuciurgan power plant last December. Under the contract, the entire volume of gas delivered by Gazprom is supplied to the Transnistrian region, while the plant supplies the right bank of the Dniester with electricity at a price of $73 per megawatt-hour.
